A year ago a virus named COVID-19 came on the scene and we went into lockdown. It was the end of “normal” as we knew it. Schools, churches, restaurants and stores closed. Social distancing protocols were put in place. Doctors and nurses were hailed as heroes, working long hours and many times succumbing to this virus. This virus spread worldwide seemingly overnight, becoming a global pandemic sending us scurrying into our homes and causing us to stock up on toilet paper.
Before Covid, we were out and about on a daily basis. My husband and I would take my dad to lunch. A couple times a week I would get together with a group of friends to paint. We would go to church on Sunday and I would sing in the choir. Life overnight changed and was put on hold. While life has been disrupted, there are some positive things that I have learned.
- When we were first on lockdown, there was a meme that said. “There is a new restaurant in town. It’s called the kitchen. You cook your own food. I don’t know how it will stay in business.” If we should eat at home, it is my husband who usually cooks. However, I have discovered YouTube cooking videos and a number of recipes online. My creations are not bad either as evidenced as my clothes fitting a little less loosely.
- The technology of zoom where you can invite people into your room. You can meet with friends, have meetings, go to church or see your doctor. All without putting on your shoes.
- My home has become a bra-free and makeup free zone. These are things I thought I had to do each day. It is surprisingly freeing not doing them. And, while the world is different, it hasn’t stopped turning. Home in fact is my sanctuary.
- There are projects that I have accomplished. Like with the help of a friend, clean our closets and drawers and getting rid of items that I no longer use. Getting this website up and running. Also, collaborating with a friend to complete the “On the Wings of Love” inspirational card deck.
- There is a renewed appreciation for those who are in my life, from friends and family to furry babies. We have had to say goodbye to people and pets in each category over the year. While I know each one is safe on the other side, there is still a sadness that lingers.
The life we knew has changed. What once was will never be the same again. However, in the words of Hafez “Life is too sacred to ever end”
